 The Southwest String Quartet,
based in Tucson, Arizona, is known throughout the state for classical
recital performances, children’s programs, senior citizen concerts and
string quartet workshops. The quartet has an original approach, accompanying
each composition with commentaries and insights into the composers and
music.
“The String Quartet's Ravel, performed with an Impressionist Art slide show was a special delight!” Arizona Daily Star
The Southwest String Quartet
performs yearly recitals in Tucson, Green Valley, Sun City, Phoenix, Scottsdale
and other communities in Arizona. Their repertoire spans the music of the
Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods. The quartet frequently
features works of twentieth century American composers.
“The quartet lavished a honeyed tone – the real thing, not nutrasweet! It was a loving performance of great charm, warmth and sensitivity.” Arizona Daily Star
The quartet has created a
special "Out West" program for children of all ages. The group dresses
in a western style and leads the listener down the pathways of the wild
west. The program culminates in a musical dramatization of Susan Lowell’s
"The Three Little Javelinas", or "The Tortoise and the Jackrabbit".
In a series of vivid and rollicking sound pictures with melodies, words,
grunts, squeaks, whistles and thumps, the quartet uses all the resources
of classical music and more to tell the stories.
“Howling classical musicians with a Southwestern flair turned the tale of ‘The Three Little Javelinas’ into a lively, entertaining and charming production.”
The Phoenix Gazette
The Southwest String Quartet
has collaborated recently with two dance companies in the Tucson area.
The quartet provided the narration and music for the Tucson Regional Ballet’s
performance of the "Three Little Javelinas". The quartet has also performed
with the Tenth Street Danceworks in a series of
modern dances set to traditional classical music.
“The FAB FOUR!” Tucson Weekly
The Southwest String Quartet
leads two summer Chamber Music Workshops for high school and middle school students. The programs have been sponsored by
national grants from the Chamber Music Society and the Clinton B. Ford
Fund. These highly successful workshops introduce young string players
to the challenges and joys of string quartet playing.
The Southwest String Quartet
is available for a wide variety of performance situations including residencies, recitals, special presentations and weddings.
